Hi, I want to up the power of my standard 1098, the engine is in good condition and I was thinking of fitting a 12g940 head, bit bigger carb,better exhaust system and maybe cam change.
Can anyone tell me of the possible increase in BHP this will bring, or would it be better with a standard Ford crossflow 1100/1300 and box ,thanks.

Don't bother too much with cam change - the 1098 engine can't be revved - so the existing cam is fine, although an MG Metro cam may give a couple or three of extra horses. 940 head + 1.5" carb on alloy inlet = ~ 60 bhp I didn't really notice any massive improvement when I then fitted a large bore/straight through exhaust. You will want a lower ratio final drive for sensibly calm cruising...... The head and carb/manifold can be done for £50 if you buy wisely......best power /£ you can do. Obviously a Ford conversion will cost much more - but will presumably give you a more 'modern' engine.

I doubt a standard crossflow 1100 would be worth the hassle, as the A-Series with the kind of simple modifications you describe will provide more power. Personally I wouldn't bother with the 1300 either, as you may as well use a 1275 A-Series (getting fairly expensive these days, but still out there). A 1600, on the other hand...

Obviously you'd also need to fit something like a K&N air filter if you were to get the best out of the larger carb, etc.
