My 1969 traveller is missing the spare wheel compartment wooden cover.
Can anyone give me the dimensions, thickness and type of wood as I'm going to attempt to make one.
Thanks for your help
Nick

It was originally a fibreboard material (a bit like very soft and flexible hardboard) approx 1/4 inch thick so that it slid down the channel provided by the two fillets on the inside of the corner posts. Reinforced by a thin metal channel (U section) across the bottom. Some "specialists" sell them in plywood, which is most definitely wrong. Newton Commerical make them, but they are much too thin. Width and height dimensions are to fit your vehicle.

ok thanks I will try and locate some board.
I also meant to ask about the finish, are they painted matt black, is there any chance of a photo of an original ?
Thanks
Nick

OK. here's an original cover in place. Unfortunately the folded metal strip at the bottom has disintegrated, but you can still see the overall concept. It should be square corners at the bottom and rounded at the top.[frame]

And here's a view of the inside - note: not painted. I hope that those help.[frame]

I think that my piece of metal treadplate, an offcut from the local metal suppliers, will considerably outlast the original fibre board which could always be kept for concours judging.

Agreed, but that bit of fibreboard isn't too bad after 43 years of service
