indicator clicking...

Post by Arthurdaily »

Im' putting all the lights back on my project, but mixed up the wires which don't appear as the original colours! So, main lights fine - I turned them on and off and used a multimeter to find which was which etc... but having difficulty with the indicators - should they still 'click click click' even without any lights being attached? As at the moment it is dead... does the engine have to be on for indicators? Can't remember...

Thanks!

They'll only flash at the right rate when two bulbs of the correct wattage are connected. They should be on an ignition-controlled circuit.

To sort the wires to the flasher unit out: sort out the three wires that went to the flasher unit; see which one becomes live when the ignition is turned on. Connect this one directly to each of the other two, in turn. One should light the warning light, the other should feed the winker switch and thence the indicators themselves. So with the live feed to the flasher unit still connected to the wire that doesn't light the warning light, check whether one terminal of the indicator switch is live, and that the switch connects to right or left according to its position.

No point in connecting the flasher unit itself until you can show that indicators themselves can be turned on and off. The you'll probably find your super new Chinese flasher unit is faulty.

The flasher unit is usually fixed to the left hand side of the bulkhead (small silver cylinder) :[frame]Image[/frame]

If yours is in a different position you'll just have to hunt around for it! :)
