The fuel pump should be just on the passenger side of the engine bay. This, when working properly "ticks" away at a varying rate of something like once a second. It sometimes gets a bit erratic when running hot as it trier to pump fumes.

Agreed, sounds like no fuel!
If it has fuel, then there is a problem (leak, broken pick up pipe in tank or something) between the fuel pump and the fuel in the tank.
It shouldn't tick away (if it is an SU pump) once the float bowl is full if the engine isn't running.

Is the engine turning over? That may sound a silly question, but here's what sometimes happens: The battery is too low to crank the engine over, but has just enough juice left to fire the starter solenoid -- which makes clicking sound. So far, then, you've got to check for fuel and a possible low battery.
