Does the water pump really need to be serviced?

Hello everybody and Happy New Year to you all.
I know that many of you have strong views about using the Haynes manual, but I still like to use it as one of my sources alongside the workshop manual and this forum. The Haynes manual suggests "lubricating the water pump sparingly with grease" as part of the 12,000mile service and contains a section on dismantling the water pump.
You don't need to tell me your views on the Haynes manual
, but does anybody have any views about dismantling and lubricating the water pump? Is it worth doing every couple of years or so or is it a complete waste of time and effort?
Have fun,
Mikey
