Choke Problem

Hi All,
Noticed when my Minor was delivered in October that the choke control had a clothes peg attached to it and having removed this item it seems that the choke will not remain in the pulled out or half lock positions. Is it really just a matter of giving the cable a twist at the carb end and relocking or could it be something more serious?

Just stick with the clothes peg....... Yes - the twist idea should work, but you may just end up in a mess. Stick with the peg......

Make sure that it is a wooden clothes peg, as that makes it more authentic

And when the clothes peg is not in use it is clipped behind the rear view mirror

yes the plastic moderns look out of place,stick with the wood

The early choke controls had a ratchet pull, the 1098 chokes were pull and twist

On the plus side, you can colour co-ordinate a modern one to match the dashboard making it less noticeable, although a wooden one is a good match for a traveller. I guess it depends on how much of a clothes peg purist you are. Some prefer traditional looking one, others prefer more modern ones, but it's your choke knob so do whatever suits you. I wouldn't worry about it too much unless planning on going concours, in which case the peg will need to have been manufactured during the same year as the vehicle or you'll lose points

My personal philosophy is to use a peg consistent with what BMC would have used had the Minor stayed in production; for example, they probably would have sourced the peg from late Mini parts bins...

Peg size is also crucial. After much trial and error I found I needed two small pegs for initial start-up, dropping to one for driving off. My wife chose the 'style' - 50's kitsch, despite my protests that they are on a 1971 Minor......
