Loom and subloom

Post by Fingolfin »

Mog has the "American-style" combined tail- and stop-lights, with the eight-way relay. I ordered a new loom from Autosparks, and it fits well, except that it has fitments for the later amber turn-lights. Autosparks kindly supplied me a sub-loom to connect up the combined flashers, but I don't know how the loom and the subloom connect! The wire colors and lengths don't seem to make sense. Does anyone 1) know what I'm talking about or 2) have any ideas? Better still, does anyone have any experience of this sort of situation?

Fin,

Is the sub-harness for the eight way flasher relay? I assume so. You should be able to match everything up to the wiring diagram in your hand book. Work through gradually wire by wire off the car. Note that the extra cables for the flashers are redundant.

Indeed, for the eight-way relay. I've been working via the wiring diagram(s), and I've made a lot of progress, but there are things that don't make sense...for instance, the steering column stuff has five wires, remaining from the old loom. The new main loom has about ten or twelve. The sub-loom has four or five, and some of those colors match the old loom bits, but not all. I'm not sure of the interplay between the two loom sections. What do I do with all the redundant wires?

I imagine all this will make more sense when I've got it as connected as I think I can get it, and put the battery on, and test it all. I'm just...well, I'm worried about it, having had two shorts on the previous loom. I've got it in the car now, but before I put it in I labeled as much as I could find to label, which has helped.

Which set of wires for the flasher unit are redundant, the ones on the main loom or on the subloom?

Fin, do you have the BMC workshop manual? Or access to the online copy?
The reason I ask is that the wiring diagram on page N.38 is correct for our '61 Morris Minor 1000, which I suspect should be the same as yours, being that it's a Canadian car with the, quote: [ "American-style" combined tail- and stop-lights, with the eight-way relay.]
If need be I could scan and e-mail you the diagram.

Yeah, I have it -- the .pdf, a printed copy of the .pdf, and an old paperbound BL copy! On N.38 is indeed correct for my car, well spotted. The difficulty I'm having is that there are wires of the same color that are duplicated in the main loom and the subloom, mostly in the indicator circuit.
I have had some success with other wiring -- the dash switches are all in, as are most of the bulkhead gadgets, and the courtesy light. I imagine if I stare at the wires long enough they'll begin to make sense...

I would imagine that it is the main loom wires (to the separate flashers) that will be redundant.
