Protecting from rust

Possibly a stupid question but how are you supposed to protect some parts of the engine from rust. I.e most of the outside of the engine is painted. However the sides (under the front and backplate) aren't. Is there something to put on before the plate goes over?

Also inside the engine (i/e inside the crankcase or sump), there appears to be black paint. What is this and can I paint over it with the same stuff?

Usually plenty of oil around to stop the engine rusting.... wipe over with an oily rag will be fine. Best to NOT put any paint inside the engine...
