Ital engines

Post by lynda »

After all the questions about upgrades etc, there's a chance I may be buying an already modified car.... from Cornwall (my Dad says it's not a problem to collect!). Anyway, it has a 1275 Ital engine which is apparently a bit tired and may need a rebuild or replacement in the next couple of years. I don't have any more info than that, as I just got the email from the owners. Does anyone know how easy it is to get hold of parts etc for the engine?

The owners are asking 600 ono for the car, and it needs up to 200 gbp of work to go through an MOT (no welding), which they would organise for me. For a car with this engine, upgraded suspension, disc brakes, lowered, and 5 speed gear box, a bit of rust on the door bottoms and a random dent in the wing, would you say this was a reasonable price?

If the car comes with a new Mot that sounds a fair price for a tatty modified Minor as the cost of the parts far outweighs the cost of the car, you need to carry out the usual checks underneath etc though to be on the safe side, parts for the engine are not a problem as its still an `A` series just the later A plus type with a bit more bhp.

Well, we've decided not to buy it, because it was mainly to avoid the hassle of changing the engine in my project car - and if we still have to change an engine then we haven't really gained anything. I guess I'll just have to keep looking!

Lynda why not put a posting in the for sale section or get the seller to do it as a car with those sorts of mods already done should appeal to somebody.

hard to say if that's a good price or a bad one. Cars with no MOT rarely fetch more than a few hundred, and one with a 1275 engine on e-bay recently didn't reach £250.
Modified cars rarely fetch more money than standard cars, however it can save the new owner a fortune if the mods are exactly what you want.

I just asked my insurers about a 2 litre Fiat twin cam powered split screen, as I found one of those for sale.... but I've decided that's not such a good idea - I'll stick to looking for a 1.3 :) £350 per year isn't horrendous, but they'd want an engineers report and it's really not worth the hassle.

I enquired about one on ebay recently, but they didn't return my emails so I wouldn't bid for it.....
