Its often the gasket under the fuel gauge sender leaking. You will see it on top of the tank under the boards. Mine leaked and stank the car out. Easy to change the gasket.

Or rot on the top of the tank.... Or the float chamber overflowing - is the pump ticking away 19 to the dozen? Meantime - open the window and put that fag out!

Unless you have a non-standard fuel pump fitted - the standard pump is mounted high up on the left side under the bonnet - and makes a ker-tick ker-tick noise. It should make a very few such noises when you switch on - and then should fall silent until you start the engine. If it's ticking all the time then the fuel is overflowing in the carb - it may all go down into the engine, or it may appear over the top of the bowl and run/drip down in the engine bay. Have a look under the bonnet!

Are you sure that tank side is OK? The top of the fuel level sending unit is located toward the front of the tank (closest to the passenger compartment) in the center, and the tank is recessed at that point. On a full tank of gas that section is fully immersed. Any leak at all around the sender will allow some gas to escape. You need to visually inspect to top of the sender itself with a full tank. It's under the luggage shelf, behind the spare tire. I say this because this is the most likely source of gas smell in the interior.

There is a section of flexible pipe between the filler pipe and the tank, this can fail and will stink the car out if the tank is filled to the brim.
