Hey guys, I need to get my steering wheel off, A) my horn isn't working, and I know it's the contact under there and B) the MOT man put my steering wheel back on ever so crooked, and being very very OCD it's driving me mad.


Problem, I can't find a socket big enough or deep enough to fit it, can anyone tell me what size I need, and even better, link me to somewhere I can buy one!?

Chisel and hammer - tap tap and it's off. But don't take the nut right off - slacken it to near the top of the thread and then yank the wheel to free it on the splines - otherwise it jumps up and hits you in the face.........

that big nut? Surely it has to be unscrewed with a socket? I've taken the horn push button off, and underneath theres that big nut, I don't understand what you mean, sorry!

The correct way is to use a 3/4 whitworth socket

Thanks! Any idea where I can pick one up deep enough to get the wheel out the way? No horn is becoming a bit of a hazard....

A standard 1/2 in drive 3/4 Whit socket on a bar will fit between the spokes behind the rim or a 2 in extension bar will fit over the rim.
What was the MOT tester taking your wheel off for? That is not part of the test

Seriously - just hit it - it won't be that tight. The socket has no other use on a Minor - so don't fanny about - just chisel the nut!

Get the MOT man to put it back on properly!

Why was it any of his business in the first place?

Do you have another indicator switch to fit once you have removed the wheel?? The horn contact is an integral part of it, unless you have somehow managed to wear through the slip-ring!! Get a socket to undo the nut- 34mm 1/2" drive, available on EBay for £7.50 including postage. Better than wielding a hammer and cold chisel if you are not entirely conversant with that level of technology!

Just didn't like the multiple warnings of missing teeth and broken noses....

He didn't put it back on right as he's a robbing crook who never does a job properly, but that's another story.

also can be used to remove the rear cap from brake m/c when modifying to add remote reservoir (e.g. during disk brake upgrade.. )

Many years ago I got a metric one from Halfuds on a weekend - worth keeping.
Chisel method does work if you are used to doing that - This one is not an ideal learning experience for someone who has never chiselled a nut and also not something it's worth learning to do anyway as tools are less expensive* than ever.

* - less expensive e.g. relative cost when compared to UK cost of living / garage bills etc...

On my first Minor a previous owner had drilled a hole halfway down on the face of the nut for the purpose of angling in a phillips screwdriver and whacking to get the nut off and on without damaging the flats.

The brush part that connects the indicator stalk to the brass (bronze?) ring might just need pushing back into shape.
