MYSTERY PANEL

just bought this on ebay - arrived to today should be a CHS708 which is - qtr panel - inner - rear- Left hand

any one got any idea what this is ???!!![frame][/frame]

not sure if its even moggy related ?

It looks like a rear undersill cover panel. To clarify, these and the coresponding ones for in front of the crossmember were available through the 1980s and into the '90s (even advertised in Practical Classics!) Its a cheap and quick way of repairing Minor sills that is designed to span the inner and outer undersill sections and present a 'neatly' repaired sill for MOT purposes.
They do not repair the sill structure correctly and are rarely seen fitted well with anything like continuous welding, though the Minors inherent strength will put up with a lot of hidden sill problems and still work ok, (unless a convertible).
Having said that they've probably saved many Minors from the scrapper by keeping them on the road when they were just a cheap old car on the cusp of 'classicness' so not to be despised out of hand.
However in todays enlightened times you don't really want to be using these, and its really unusual to see them still offered. Presumably a really old stock ebay or autojumble find. Its a bit of a cheek marking one up as a CHS708 though even if it is to repair the same area.
I've got a front undersill cover panel hung up on the wall at work for demonstrationg to people what to look out for (and avoid if poss) when buying a Minor.

I did have a look under my morris to see if I could work out where it went - the seller has been excellent and given a full refund via ebay - I have no intention of fitting it ! just curious

Don't forget the pop rivets! Seems to have worked pretty well for the previous owner!

found one other very small patch in the drivers foot well side panel that had been pop riveted on ! - other than that, its fairly un messed with - rear and front spring hangers good and the cross members - chassis legs at the front will need patching - bound to find more as I angle grind my on to victory ![frame][/frame]

That panel does look like a cover sill to me. My blue 2dr has them on three of the four 'quarters'. Curiously, removing the kick plate on the offside a few years ago revealed a sound sill underneath, so I'm not quite sure why it's covered up! I'll have to take photos sometime so people know what they look like.
