the impending damper removal is almost here and i need to liberally apply releasing oil to aid the removal.

whats the best brand of releasing oil?

i would be tempted to use WD40, but is there anything else people would recommend

wd40'd do the job -- Q20's pretty good too, might also like to use a specialist 'penetrating oil', but wd/q20 should do the trick

Mix old engine oil with parafin and put it in a spray bottle dispenser. Saves / recycles old engine oil and is a very cheap release agent.....

WD 40 is NOT a release oil...... Use Plus Gas - something like that.

another good one is pocket rocket, though sometimes hard ro find.

My vote goes to Plus Gas.

There are a load of test results somewhere. I'll try and find a link. I quite highly rate Plus Gas, but the best by far is 50/50 mix of hydraulic oil (ATF) and acetone. Works out by far the cheapest too! I have been using it since I found out and am well impressed.

I wonder if it has to be ATF - I suspect 10W40 engine oil +acetone would be just as good.

i use 10-40 and parafin mixed about 50/50 in a trigger spray to lube threads prior to undoing but i dout it would penatrait very efectively, going to try acetone/ oil tho

where can you get acetone these days?

pretty sure you can, but from a specialist company. I have ordered several gallon of the stuff (for work mind you) from a company, but then it was to a business address.

maybe worth a trip to the local chemists (Not boots)

The acetone/atf mix has to be stored in a sealed container, otherwise the acetone will evaporate.

Doesn't sound like a sealed container to me.

Anywhere that sells fibreglass supplies, it's used to clean resin of brushes.
