oil filter bowl (Old one) assembly tips

hi there. i just got some new bits and i don't have the old one to compare it to. i have a fram filter. it's the old fashioned set up. the new bits are not the same as the ultra ultra old stuff.
i have this new filter plate, one of never have i had before. i have a spring. i have this big washer and a rubber washer.
first there's the long nut that goes through the filter plate. then, does this big metal disc go on it, with the o ring inside it, facing up? then the oil filter bowl. then the spring, then the rubber washer, then the filter plate, with the dished concave bit in the middle going down like a plate instead of dishing up? please try and help me to get this right. many thanks.

i think it's the bolt, then the rubber washer, through the oil filter bowl, then the spring, then the other big washer with the o ring inside the middle at the top, then the filter plate on top, concave downwards. what do you think?

Newer filters have a plate on the top, so no need to use the top 'plate' illustrated in the picture.[frame]

well, in fact, there's a metal plate above and below on the fram filters, however you need that spreader filter plate to apply the right pressure to the filter to hold it up properly.
in the manual, i don't have those diagrams. also, it says that the concave bit of the plate faces downwards, in the pic it's facing up. there's two bits under the filter plate, is the first bit a washer and then the bit above is an o ring that sits inside it?
i prefer the fit of the big thick steel washer, the o ring inside it, the filter plate on top with the "concave facing downwards" Page 30, Haynes Manual.

Does the the picture not show the "concave" side facing down? (and convex side facing up)

If you have a filter cartridge with metal ends - the 'hump' goes up inside the cartridge - provided the centre hole is big enough?? Then washer + rubber seal, bolt (not nut) goes up the inside obviously but must have the seal and seal support on the outside of the bowl to keep it oil tight. Thankfully more sensible cars that use this arrangement (TR7) have thw hole assembly held together with a split pin so it can't get lost/go wrong.......... I thought you were buying a screw-on filter??

i lopped off the top of a lemon and screwed that on instead. started the car and got fizzy lemon juice on the floor! put a bowl underneath it, lemonade!!!

it wasn't the thinner o ring for the fram filter. it is the middle size ring. when I nipped up the smaller size, it didn't matter how tight it went, oil came out on spinning the engine.
I took it off and put the right o ring on.
I took out the rotor arm and disconnected the coil output. span it up with the right filter for a minute or more.
the engine is much smoother. it starts quicker and no overrun. quieter and sounds newer.
