Fuel Gauge - Again but different

The fuel gauge on my 1952 MM reads almost full no matter how much petrol's in the tank. What tests can I do to see if the problem lies with the gauge or the tank unit. I seem to remember that if you connect the tank unit terminal to earth, something happens to show what's not working but I can't remember what the "something" is. Any ideas - anybody - please???
