having just bought a new rear window heater element (one of smiths finest)

i want to mount it with the window flat and thus making it easier to install.

any idea how i could take the window out with out knackering up the seal?

Hello Chris,

as long as the seal has not gone hard, in which case you need a new one, push firmly in one corner and it should displace the seal from the window aperture, then carry on around the screen until it pops free. Probably handy to have another pair of hands as a precaution in case it slips.

Its really not worth the hassle of taking the screen out, just fit it in situ.

in the past i have tried fitting one with the screen in situ and ended up wrecking it (£25 down the pan), so this time i am determined to get it flat, not bothered about the fuss of taking the window in and out really

I also would not take window out just to fit a heated window element, if you was to measure and put masking tape where you want it to get it in line and straight im sure it would be ok. Them rear windows are a pain to refit, that seal is a nightmare, even new ones....... i damaged a new one so bought another and damaged that slightly on the inside or the corner, i just stuck it back down. Ive done lots of windows on minis, austin 1100 1300,s mgs and minors in my life, and them rear windows dont agree with me!! Only tip i would suggest is use some washing line cord to thread round the seal to fit, have a friend there to assist, cartridge of black windscreen sealer as they always leak if not sealed and warm the seal first! esp in this weather..... :)

Re-fitting a rear window into a Morris Minor is the worst job I've ever done and, I believe I can say with all confidence, by the time I finally shift off this mud ball (or to be precise am planted within it) this comment will remain true! :o

Seriously, do anything you can to aoid this job.

Dont think because you can do a front windscreen you can do a Minor rear. Oh no... thats a mistake you'll only make once. If you still want to do it - get the swear jar out and be prepared for a huge payout. Maybe book a nice meal for you and the wife after?

thankfully i didnt have to take out the rear window to fit the stick on heater element, but i did have a look at the condition of the seal, and i decided it was safer to keep the whole thing in situ, would of been a total faff if i had of decided to take it all out
