Morris Minor Owners Club

I have been given the task of rebuilding a 1098 engine to replace the 949 fitted in a friends 1968 van. It has the earlier gearbox so I am aware that I need to use the 948 flywheel and backplate but the engine was a 'freebie' so wants to make use of it. Can you advise the best place to obtain a rebuild kit please (bearings, rings, gaskets etc) my friend is a Club Member but has no internet access so it is all down to little old me!

You should be able to buy the parts you need frrom the suppliers advertising in Minor Matters which your friend will have a copy of.

Just search the internet - however it's not normal to buy a 'kit' since until you strip the engine - you won't know what you need. Main suppliers are JLH/Bull Motif/MOSS/DSN/ESM and various others - but where possible it makes sense to buy locally to avoid postage costs. MOSS for example have outlets in several cities - there may be one near you. You should be aware that there is no point fitting new shell bearings unless the crankshaft journals are pretty much 'perfect' - and similarly new piston rings are a waste of money and time if the bores are worn. You should always fit a new oil pump - and a new timing chain, although an upgrade to the later Mini type with tensioner is well worth doing if the original sprockets are worn (sharp teeth!).

Thank you for the replies, as yet I haven't dismantled the engine (apart from removing the head, and the bores look good) and it is 36 years since I last did an A series when I was working fo a BMC dealer back in Reading, but I feel sure that it will all come flooding back! Just a thought, do club members get any discounts for parts at all?

best to ring each company available for a quote, and ask them if they do discount for club members.

if you do find the crank and bores are in good condition, and just want to fit new shells and rings, be sure to check for oversize markings so you dont try to fit standard shells to a reground crank!

If you worked on these engines 36 years ago at a BMC Dealer - there's not much we can teech you ! It's like riding a bike - you never lose the knack. Always look out for 'special deals' - sometimes in the run up to or just after Christmas. And some places offer free delivery if you order a large enough parcel. Check the web sites out!
