Hi, does anybody know if you can get the rubber strip that runs round the outside of the speedo? Is it still available? Thanks!

Yes, a little thin one that sits between the outer chrome trim and the metal of the dash.

Basically a large O-ring. Such things are defintely available, but probably not as a part specifically for a Minor. I have also seen kits that allow you to splice your own O-ring to size, but can't remember where

Minor speedometers I'm familiar with don't have a rubber seal around the chrome, but rather a metal spacer ring. I'll try and find a photo.

I've never seen the rubber seal on the minor either. The chrome bezel is also available:

The black trim around the outside of the chrome bezel is what we're looking for, right? That's a metal ring with a sort of circular bend on one side, which stops the speedo going too far in the dash, I guess. I know it's metal because I spent several hours with it trying to get it to fit on the chrome properly. Also I repainted it. Anyhow, so far as I can tell the usual suppliers don't offer anything similar, but you might try emailing them.

The outer metal ring does indeed stop the speedo slipping in too far, but there SHOULD be a rubber O-ring between that metal ring and the dashboard. It stops vibration. It's not surprising that many are missing after so many years, but that does not alter the fact that they were there originally - and still are on all three of mine.

yes! most minors have lost these over the years, these go between the aluminum dash plate and the speedo head itself, like headlamp bucket to wing rubber seal, yes it stops vibration and also looks neat and doesnt cause any chaffing, i always say if this is still on your minor you got a good example!!

They go between the 'aluminum dash plate' and the speedo head. What's the aluminum dash plate? The dash is made of aluminum? I thought it was steel!

The late Series 2's and early 1000's didn't have the aluminium dash panel so I think the rubber seal just sits behind the chrome finisher on our speedo's. The link to this page shows the aluminium trim and chrome speedo finisher.

OH! Forgive my lack of cleverness...I didn't think about Minors other than my own. But all Minors did have the rubber thing? I recall the fit being quite tight even without the rubber thing, but I shall make an effort to obtain one anyhow.

FWIW, my BMC service parts list, fifth issue, doesn't show one between the chrome ring and the dash panel.

My pick-up, built in March 1973, had one of these rings or the gooey remains of.

It's probably down to one of those famed BMC/BL some cars do, some cars don't parts. The majority of cars I've seen, especially the later ones have not had the 'o' ring. I don't really think it matters too much either way. As far as I know, all centrally mounted speedo's should have the finisher on the outside. I think some of the late series 2's and early 1000's may have had the finisher painted in body colour and the later 1000's in chrome to blend with the aluminium panel. Whether you have a rubber seal or not would appear to be up to you. It can only be to stop the speedo head vibrating against the main dash panel.

No mention of this ring in the Service Parts List!
