I have cleaned my very dirty carb, (smoky engine was running when I bought the traveller) it had a teaspoon full of very fine rust in the float bowl and slightly sticking air valve piston.

All nice and clean and smooth now BUT there was no gasket between the bell chamber (suction chamber) and the body of the carb, can’t see any sign of one in the advertised BM repair kits.
Should there be one?

Also the rubber washer at the base of the float bowl where the thin pipe from the jet enters is all chewed up, cant find these anywhere except by buying a full repair kit @ £29.99 plus postage.

No gasket - can you not use a little O ring for the jet feed pipe seal?

You can use a valve stem seal from your head gasket kit instead.
You do have a head gasket kit don't you .
A good investment and may come in handy one day.

thanks for answer on the gasket, as to the "O" ring suggestion that might work, I have a set of Auldi "O" rings and as the carb does not get to hot they should cope.

Thats a good idea, I,ve used my gasket set on the engine rebuild but still have the old "O" rings.
As the original is so squashed I was not sure if it had to be a special shape.
I will of course buy another gasket set to be prepared

Just to point out, I think the 'rust' is actually sand from the petrol station. Mine was recently cleared out of LOTS of the stuff and the guy at the garage said it is the sand that comes from the bottom of the tanks at the petrol stations, no way of avoiding it just to fit a fuel filter before the pump and clean the float bowl when servicing

Sand from the petrol station??? Aye...right. It's the rust from the inside of the petrol tank!

S'what I was told proved wrong always..

as Roy said, it was rust, the small filter in the pump was full of bigger pieces the same colour, and on cleaning out the tank it had a couple of cups full of rust flakes.

I’m still reading blogs and adverts trying to decide which of the cleaning and tank sealants are best, they all seem to have complaints that at worst it comes of in a couple of months, at best 5 or 6 years.
The most popular say they are ok up to 10% Ethanol.
One is marine clean, now called PQR15, this seem to get good feedback
