Dynamo Terminals which Cabel

Post by Watson48 »

Hi,
on my Morris Eight ´48 (6V) I've swapped the cable for the alternator shoes because they were corroded.
But I do not know which cable belongs to which connection on the alternator.
At the alternator, I have a connection with a small diameter and a connection with a thicker connection. Which of the two terminals is for the yellow cable? I can not find names on the alternator. Is the thicker one "D" or?

Thx Oliver
Oliver

Your post is a bit confusing ("alternator shoes"? - dynamo in the title, alternator in the text?), but assuming it really is a 6v dynamo, then the two terminals are "D" and "F". "D" is the larger one. They connect to the corresponding terminals on the control box. I don't have a Series E wiring diagram to hand, but on other cars of that period the wire to the F terminals is yellow/white and the D wire blue/black. Things change over 60 years, so check both ends of the cables, and if necessary disconnect both ends and check continuity to be sure.

As above really -the thicker cable will go to the larger terminal and the thinner to the smaller. You won't do any great harm if you get it wrong - it just won't charge.

Thx for the reply.
Yes its a Dynamo. But when i use Google-Translation in German is the Dynamo and Alternator the same. In German = Lichtmaschine.
I have found a Info in the Web that is D the thicker one.
Thx...
Oliver

Dynamo is a DC generator, alternator is a generator that produces AC current - although of course this is rectified to DC for use on the car! There will surely be different German words for each ? Anyway - as long as you now know how to connect it!

Yes the right Words are:
Drehstromlichtmaschine = Dynamo and Wechselstromlichtmaschine = Alternator
But colloquially called both "Lichtmaschine". ;)
