General filler and light-weight stopper type 'bondo stuff for scratches etc seems VERY expensive at Halfords - where is the best place to buy large tines of this stuff?

Either your nearest motor paint suppliers, or an independant motor factors may sell 'paint ' materials. Both will be cheaper than Halfords!
Bigger container the cheaper it gets - depends how much surface prep you need to do, but assume you'll use more than you think...

But it goes off with time - so don't buy a 'lifetime' supply........
