pinking

Post by cadetchris »

having been told to "adjust till the engine is pinking" in the past, i have stood and looked blank.

so, what on earth is pinking? what sound/colour is it? what are the noticeable signs?

any and all advice would be good, ideally a youtube video of such a affect would be of benefit.

n.b,
i know this is going to attract a bit of flack, but until shown/told people simply wont know what it is

i can't say i've ever experienced it (knowingly).

it has been discussed before, and the best description i heard was 'the sound of ball bearings being dropped into a glass'

pink pink pink...

Tinkling noise as you accelerate in top gear.

Stops if you ease off the loud pedal.

And so, as it was described to me.
The spark to the spark plug is firing too early. (too advanced)
SO, if you look at the dissy (cap removed), you'll notice that the rotor arm goes round clock-wise and fires in the order of 1-3-4-2.

SO, if the spark is firing too early then you'll need to move the dissy body on a little bit (clock-wise) further away from the rotor arm (retarded) so that it can spark a little further on in the cycle.

Pinking is the fuel igniting before the piston has reached the top and hits the piston on the head too early, hence the 'pinking' noise.

DOH! Very sorry. Yes indeed ANTI-clockwise. What can I say. I like to drink a little red wine on a saturday evening. (And I've given the game away as it was only gone 7ish!)

To view this,(not me drinking that is) Try ignition OFF, dissy cap OFF, select a forward gear, release handbrake AND then pull the car towards you (easier with the spark plugs out). Although only try this on a flat surface!

All this does is mimic the car in forward motion and you can view the rotor arm turning.
