Hi - is it correct that the radiator has to be removed in order to adjust the timing on a Moggy?

Absolutely NOT.......whoever came up with that idea??? Just advance the timing a little bit at a time until you detect some pinking when you accelerate in top gear - then retard it a little so it's 'not quite' pinking. You have then optimised it to your engine's requirements.

My guess is that it is a cynical reference to the position of the timing marks (on the bottom of the timing cover)!

Or else they were refering to a side valve engine with a water pump. You need to set the timing before you replace the rad or you cannot see the timing marks.
