Running in

Hi all,
I'm sure this has been covered before, but i'm blowed if i can find it!
Just would like some advice as to running in a newly reconned engine.
i assume it's the standard 500 miles without revving it too high.
what else needs to be done/kept in mind?
Thanks
Matt

10 mph for each gear (10,20,30,40). No labouring.

And you need the nice 'RUNNING IN PLEASE PASS' notice in the rear window - should be blue print on white - about 18" long by 2" wide as I remember. Was issued with every new Minor. :) Anyone got an original??

i'd change the oil and filter after 500-1000 miles too.

i wouldn't be affraid to go faster than 40 in 4th, but ease it gently up to faster speeds every so often. get the engine used to higher revs too.

What's been done to the engine? Be sure to retorque the head after the first heat cycle - and then set the valve gaps 12thou for inlets and 15 thou exhausts.

i think this is the recon engine that cakey-katie was looking at. so it's had new rings and shells, and it's (supposedly) unleaded so it shouldn't need the noisy 15 thou exhaust gap.

Oh dear, that engine - well rings and shells won't need much running in if that's all that's been done - but of course - don't hammer it. Have to hope the bores have been 'glaze busted' .... And I recommend that ALL A series run with the 15 thou exhaust gap. MG/Rover had the same idea.......

Important when running in to vary your speed so that the engine is running at different revs. Obviously avoid labouring, high revs and hard acceleration

Hello all,

I recently came across this article, it makes interesting reading, and not just for racing engines:-http://www.pumaracing.co.uk/runin.htm

Oh dear no - the BMC ones said 'Running In Please Pass' blue on white.
