Dynamic Ignition timing

I'd like to set up the ignition timing for my standard 1098 moggie with rev counter and strobe. Could anyone let me know what degree of advance at what revs please?

Don't bother! Do you know the accuracy of the 'rev counter?' anyway?? The ONLY way to set the timing is to advance it bit by bit till it 'pinks' when you accelerate in top gear, and then take it back very slightly so it's 'not quite' pinking. This setting will be unique to each engine, therefore setting to any fixed figure will just be like shooting into the dark!

Tried that method on a side valve, it doesn't work. By the time you have wound on enough advance to get it to pink on 6.5/1 C/R it won't run properly anyway

We aren't talking about an ultra low compression SV here......

Hi - understand there must be great individual variation in 1098 engines but say I was going to try with an accurate tachometer and strobe what experiences have people had?

It's shooting in the dark! A strobe is useless (and why do you want to count the revs??) since we have no idea what your engine wants. And do you know what mechanical advance your dizzy is giving? You should also check the vacuum advance unit is working correctly. Then advance till pinking, and back off slightly. That's as good as you can do.
