Refitting door handle/latch assembley

Hello all just about to fit the rear external handle and door latch mechanism on a replacement rear door on my 4 door saloon. Because I didn't take it apart just need an answer to a question, is there anything that connects the external handle to the latch mechanism or does it just locate and the tab just flicks the mechanism as you pull the external handle? Just want to get it all working to align the door (which is a bit of a game) there was me thinking it would just bolt on and fit as good as the old one! Swoping the hinges over has helped a lot tho.
