Wiring for Testing Wiper Motors

Post by BigDawgV8 »

Hi All,

I have 3 wiper motors that I would like to check and see if they work.
Unfortunately I don't have a wiring diagram.

Obviously the earth goes to the tag on the body of the motor but what about the other 2 terminals?
Attaching a good battery to each terminal in turn has no affect (on all 3 motors!!!)

I am assuming the motors are scrap :( but can anyone confirm how the motor should be wired please?

Ta as usual.

Hello Martin,

I don't know offhand if the terminals are numbered, but 1 and 2 are the supply and three is earth. In other words, the wiper motor doesn't work unless both those terminals have a supply, the earth is used for the park circuit.

You DO have a wiring diagram - see Barry's excellent diagram at the head of this section......
The motor has a constant feed (term 2) to allow the motor to self park - and the switched EARTH (term 1)to initiate a cycle. And a fixed earth (term 3) to allow the motor to run to park. There is not a supply to both terminals....

Hello BMCE,

for the purpose of testing off the car, which was the original question, a supply is necessary on both terminals, and by supply I mean 12v positive and negative.

A 'supply' would clearly tell me to put +12v on both the terminals.....

Oh yes I am! And in the context of a motor car - 'supply' to me is the +ve feed, and 'return' would be the term used for the -ve earth. Yes of course - I have an 'electrical supply' to my house, but inside the house it splits into feeds and returns......
