the key turns and pretends to lock it. Some one said my boot handle is upside down (1970 2 door saloon)my horns point downwards, could this be the cause?

The 'horns' are on the bottom side of Mog's boot handle, too (not that that means it's correct!). I think it shouldn't matter which way it goes.
"Pretends to lock it" means there's a locking feel? There's a 'clunk' of sorts?

Mine is the same.......clunks shut but turning the key makes no difference, it still opens.

Locking it should stop the handle turning, if you can still open the boot the striker plate probably needs adjusting.

Being old and having seen lots of the different ways things fail helps a lot :) .
The Minor boot lid isn't a very stiff structure which can leave scope for the catch to be defeated.
