Type the info into the Directgov DVLA website search http://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/. That will tell whether they have record of the vehicle in a taxable status. If it comes up blank, then there is a fair chance it is dead. You could advertise on the forum or in the club mag to see if it is lurking, unknown to the DVLA, in someones garage as a "one day" project.
Sorry- not clever enough to get that link to work, but type it into google and you will be pointed to it :-?

There is a fair chance that the reg has been transfered to another vehicle
