I spent ages trying to reduce free movement of clutch pedal as it was about 3/4 inch more than it should be with the 1098cc clutch. I found it very difficult to get it right. The pedal now moves about half an inch loosely with no resistance at all. Does this completely loose waggle count in the total of the pedal movement or not? It wasn't loose before I tried adjusting the pedal movement, it just moved smoothly down until resistance was felt!

Hmmmm - well -it depends if it's just 'looseness' in the pedal mounting, and in fact the carbon thrust is being held against the pressure assembly -which is obviously no good! The carbon must NOT be rubbing when the pedal is released - that's what matters....

Is the clutch return spring still connected?

Clutch return spring all in order. Have had another go at adjustment this morning but every time I measure pedal movement it is different. Is it safer to have too much pedal movement, such as 2 inches, rather than too little? The workshop manuals make clutch adjustment seem so easy!

When you press the clutch pedal you should feel when the release bearing pushes on the clutch plate. As long as you have spare movement above that point and you can engage 1st and reverse with the pedal fully depressed without crunching then you should be ok

If it's different every time - it seems to me the pedal is partially seized on it's pivot - I suggest a swift application of 'release oil' followed by engine oil later once the movement eases off.
