Starting issue, starter motor?

Post by laneychief »

Hey guys, I've been having a issue with starting my car, mostly when it's cold I think, I've changed the brushes in the starter motor, but it is still doing this, I have put a video on youtube of the problem, so you can all see exactly what it is and hopefully tell me how to remedy it!

Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPOWbCya ... ideo_title

Thanks guys, I hope you can help!

Dodgy solenoid. Worth checking the connections - and is it well earthed? But not a lot you can do internally - so it probably needs a new one......

So it's the solenoid, not the starter motor, ok I'll see if I can clean it up and check the earths on it if not will ESM have one?

Thanks for the quick response

IS this what you mean? The actual bit the key goes into, or the bit thats under the bonnet with the wire from the battery running to it?

Yes - I think it is probably the solenoid - although it's just possible it is the key switch. But it sounds like it's 'clicking' on the video - so I do think solenoid. Be sure to disconnect the battery before going near it.....
To test it -you need a length of wire connected to the battery, then Ign OFF and gearbox in neutral, touch the wire to the small terminal on the solenoid. If it operates the starter every time you do this, then it must be the key switch (or the connections on it) - if the starter doesn't always 'strike' (as in your vid) - then it is the solenoid which is faulty.

Ok, so that isn't the right part I've posted in the last link?

What do I need to buy from ESM if I can't get it working by cleaning it?

Sorry, solenoids and stuff is just another bit of the car I haven't had to touch yet, learning a lot still.

Cheers

Ok, so I tested as instructed and deduced it was the solenoid at fault, as you suspected, so I cleaned it up and all the earths and it seems to be ok now, I will keep an eye on it and order a new solenoid just incase as they aren't too pricey.

Once again thanks for your help.

Good news ! They are reliable - and so it was probably not earthing properly. No need for a new one if that one is working ok now.......... You'll soon find plenty to spend your money on......

Had to pick up a new solenoid as a couple of days after I fixed it, the clicking started again.

Just waiting on delivery and will report back once installed!
