Please help!! I've got no power!

Post by laneychief »

Ok, so here is what happened, I changed the brushes in my starter motor, I replaced it into the engine, I turn the key, it clicks and wont start a bit and then...nothing.

Power just vanished, I checked all the fuses and they are all intact.

I don't have a clue what has happened, please help!

Starter motor working before the new brushes ?
Is the shaft sticking out the end of the starter motor, free to rotate, if you spin it with your fingers ? It might be jammed in mesh with the flywheel.Ignition off,in top gear, just "rock the car by pushing it by hand to disengage.Take the car out of gear and try to spin the shaft again.
Other thoughts.
Battery drained." power just vanished "...checked with a multi meter ?
Did you clean the comutator with sand paper ( not emery paper !! ) and clean with Meths afterwards ?
Base plate sitting correctly, i.e. no gaps around the joins and long through bolts tightened down.
Brush springs correctly positioned ( no breaks in the connecting wires ) and commutator free to revolve ?
Disconnect battery, both terminals and double check.
Main thick power leads to/ from solenoid re-attached correctly ?
( Negative earth car...positive cable from the battery, to the stud with other smaller lucar terminals and the" solenoid to starter motor" attached to the other stud ) Leads should be sound and the contact rings ...clean bright metal.
Reconnect battery when you have checked out things and try again.

No point in checking the fuses as the starter motor is not on a fuse.
Remove the starter motor from the car, put it on the floor and connect one jump lead to the terminal, put your foot on it and connect the other jump lead to the flange on the starter. It should spin rapidly

Battery connections and/or poor earth connections. Do the headlights etc work ? Or is the battery just flat?

Do you have a multimetere with a resistance measurement? most of them do. try all the above that other people have said, if no luck make sure there is a complete circuit across the starter motor terminal and earth. it should only be a few ohms.
