Government Historic Vehicle VED Exemption e-Petition

There has recently been started an e-petition to re-introduce the rolling historic vehicle tax (VED) exemption - to 30 years rather than the old 25 years (it is generally accepted in most EU countries that 30 years is the age that historic status, if granted, for vehicles starts)
The details of the petition are given below.

With the new government e-petitions, if 100,000 signatures are added, the Government promise to debate the issue.

Whilst most of the Forum's visitors cars will probably be "tax exempt" already, there may be other vehicles they, or their friends, family etc. own which fall just outside the current cut-off date of pre-1973.
Therefore, might I ask that visitors to this forum, and their friends, family etc. sign up to it, even if their vehicles are already "tax exempt" under the current legislation:

Please feel free to pass this information out to any other classic car or bike clubs that you know of.

Responsible department: Her Majesty's Treasury

Re-introduce a 30 year rolling vehicle excise duty exemption scheme, for classic vehicles. For too long now the tax exemption of classic cars has been frozen, to only apply to those manufactured before 1973. History did not simply stop in 1972. These are not cars which are driven everyday but rather on sunny weekends, to attend enthusiast shows etc.. It is vitally important that we help to preserve this important part of British motoring history.

why do you disagree? the way I see it, put back what was taken away from the classic scene. it generates enough money already for the economy.

It can be very emotive to try and define what constitutes a "classic" car. I doubt that many would argue that anything currently classified as "Historic" is, in fact, a "classic". However, moving to more modern vehicles can bring a great deal of disagreement.

Of more concern is the attention that a petition such as this will draw to the current scheme. Remember that there is a serious financial deficit to be tackled. If once forces Parliament to debate a rolling tax emption, then there are those who would say: "Why on earth should there be any exemption for those old bangers?". The "Green Brigade" would scream about the pollution caused by old vehicles. Remember that these are not rational arguments, but they would be made very vocally; and the result could be that the whole scheme would be scrapped to the detriment of all existing users. There could even be a claim that old vehicles should be taxed more. My advice is to keep quiet and hope that the scheme just keeps going quietly as it is. Do not draw attention to it. Do not have any more petitions on the subject.

I've had that thought in my mind for some time now, so well said. 'Let sleeping dogs lie'.

we've also got to stop being pushovers, if you want to push for the rolling rule to be reinstated, then push for it. that's your choice, don't fear that it will attract attention, do you think the powers that be haven't looked at the classic scene and wondered how they can get more money for the coffers by taking away the free perks with pre '72 cars? i say go for it and sign if that's what your heart says. The only problem I have with this petition is that cars of today in 30 years, are they really going to be classic? They're computer controlled, not built to last, and I would have thought there wouldn't be much fun in getting a retro laptop out and programming them in 30 years. Correct me if I'm wrong.
