Thinking ahead

Just thinking ahead to respraying the body shell which has been heavily repaired - new chassis legs, floors, sills and rear wheel arches etc.

I should probably take everything back to bare metal but is there any advantage at all
to keeping what's left of the original very very flat paint - and I don't know how effective barrier coats are etc.?

If your doing the work yourself then the best way to go is bare metal, that way you can be sure there is no rust underneath the paint etc. Plus no worries about paint reactions to past work etc...

I would do one or two panels at a time and etch prime before moving on to the next panel.

I agree. Do it small bits at a time. The less time the panels spend exposed to the air the less time there is for
surface corrosion to start.

The paint that new panels come in is very poor stuff and very thin, bare metal will make sure there aren't any little rust patches starting.

Don't forget the bits you can't easily see, like the insides of the chassis legs, they don't need to be pretty but do need protection, Waxoyl or the like is popular.
