Wrong master cylinder cap?

Something wrong here, the new rubber bung won’t go on as the MC cap sticks up too high. Is this the wrong cap? Wrong rubber bung? Wrong MC? Or if this is normal, what’s the usual fix? TIA, Ken[frame]

The cap looks fine to me, Ive never used a rubber bung over the master cylinder or seen one on any minor before!

Theyre just trying to sell you two grommets
The grommet is listed in the Morris parts list as: Cover - oil filler hole - gearbox cover.
Theres nothing shown for the master cylinder filler hole and as youve found out there isnt room to fit it there.

If there wasn't one originally, there should have been.
No end of cr*p finds it's way down there and into the chassis where it does no good at all.
No doubt 40 years of being trodden on hasn't helped either.
I'd lever the plate up as evenly as possible, I might loosen the nearest screws a tad if it seemed like it would help.

The rubber bung should fit, the cap on my vehicle has good clearance. The top plate that screws down over the cylinder has 3/8'' rubber strips under it, maybe they are missing on yours. The cap should not be higher than the floor!

Never had a rubber bung on my Minors.
Changing the cover plate brass set screws for bolts is well worth doing

taupe, the bung is listed on BMs website under section 19 "BRAKES" and their description of it is: "Mastercylinder Filler Grommet(Covers hole to fill mastercylinder in floor)"
I now believe that you're correct in that there is not supposed to be a bung in that opening. The Drivers handbook says to peel back the carpet to access the MC, but doesn't mention a bung or hole filler or whatever you want to call it. Also the BMC parts list (series II and 1000, fifth issue) that I have doesn't show one either.

I agree w/MarkyB that there should be a cover, so I made one:[frame]

Crikey - everyone will want one now.............
Except - it will now take many minutes to check the fluid level - instead of just a few seconds.........

Neat solution, but why does the cap sit so high?

I think Les is right;
The top plate that screws down over the cylinder has 3/8'' rubber strips under it"
It's the floor that is too low rather than the height of the cap.
I would have used Velcro tape to hold the cover on so no tools would be needed to check the level.
