Just replacing the oil seal on the pinion shaft on the rear axle. Which way does the pinion nut undo? I've had conflicting information and don't want to end up going the wrong way.

Clolckwise I believe. It will only go on one way, you can't do much damage. The important thing is getting the seal in without damaging it.

As far as I know - it's a standard thread - so anti-clock to loosen it....... But the crush-spacer has to be correctly pre-loaded - how will you manage this ?

Yes
Its a normal thread so undo anticlockwise as bmc says
Unless you have a midget or similar replacement axle the pinion spacer is not collapsible on minors so just tighten to the torque shown in the manual.

Thanks all. Now I just have to work out a way of undoing the nut without the halfshafts turning, as the axle is still on the car. Any ideas? I did think of taking out the diff and putting the pinion shaft plate in the vice, but I'm a little concerned about damaging it.

Hi
I used a piece of dexion with two holes drilled in it and then used the propshaft bolts to hold it. If its still on the car you have the advantage of resting the end of the dexion on the floor!
Picture shows it set up for tightening, bolt on the other way to undo!

Excellent idea, taupe! I'll try that.

Well here's my version of your suggestion, taupe. I didn't have any Dexion so I used a piece of heavy duty angle iron instead, and rested it on the leaf spring instead of the floor - it worked a treat! Oil seal successfully replaced.
