As part of my rebuild I have stripped and cleaned the swivel pins and drums, I noticed that the fixing bolts for the backplate had the nuts and washers on the inside where as all the assembley drawings I have seen shows the reverse. i.e. nuts, washers and thread on the outside. From the elements point of view I would have thought it was an advantage to keep the nuts, washers etc on the inside. Anyone else noticed this?

Always had them on the outside - but if clearance inside - no harm doing that. I always smear with grease anyway - so never any question of rust or sticking!

Nuts on the outside as the factory intended it to be. The lock washers bit nicely into the leg casting, not the thin back plate. Also the rust from the harsh environment will stop them undoing. There are probably another 1000 reasons that only the designers will know. Always do things the correctly way or something may surprise you one day.

I found that with the bolt head outside I had a job getting a spanner fully onto the bolt head.
With the washer outside then you can get a spanner onto the nut better.
