Hi all
This is my first posting and I hope someone can advise me regarding the indicators on my newly acquired 1962 (March) Traveller. It has the white/red combined sidelight and indicator unit front and rear.
I wondered, in the interest of safety, if it is possible to convert this set up to an amber indication? If so can you please tell me how an what I would need to convert? Many thanks.

Your car is fitted with a relay which changes the brake lights into flashing indicators when selected. The front side lights have double filament bulbs.
Study workshop manual page N38 and remove the wires from the relay (30). Fit indicators front and rear and wire the flasher unit (38) to the indicator switch (29) and the switch to the left and right indicators respectively and the brake lights directly into the stop light switch (6). You should end up with the wires as shown on page N44.

Many thanks Mike for your comprehensive reply. Sadly, after reading your instructions several times, I fear the task is a little beyond my capability! But I am heartened that it is possible to convert. I am still confused as to whether I will need extra fittings to accommodate the proposed indicators both front and back? Sorry, but I'm a duffer and new to this game, lol.

Sorry, forgot you had a Traveller, I have simplified the first posting. It may still sound a little confusing without a wiring diagram to follow but basically you are just removing the old wiring to the indicators and running new wires direct to the indicators without using the relay.
You can either fit the later orange/white lights or keep your original lights and mount later Traveller rear indicators on brackets under the front bumper and above the rear lights.

The charm of a car of your age is that it has the interrupter indicators - just stick with them if they are working ok.

Yes, they work OK, but are they safe on todays roads?

I think that those instructions give the basic idea. You need to get the correct colour coded wires or you will never understand it at a later date.

Don't see why not safe - the Americans have used that system for many a year- maybe still do! But where in doubt - just make a handle signal as per Highway Code of that era.......

Hand signals! Yes, I did pass my test (years ago) using those; on the infrequent occasions I have used them since pedestrians have waved back happily! lol.
But I do take your point and no hasty decision will be made, we'll see how we go on. Thanks for the encouragement.

Most hand signals that you get from motorists nowadays are definately not in the Highway code!!

Mine had been converted by someone using all yellow wires. What a nightmare to sort out using standard colours so the next owner (and me) will understand what is going on.
If you have a Haynes manual just study the early and late wiring diagrams to see how totally different the setup is.

Don't convert over, if you have the middle-era larger white front sidelights. They're cool! I say that because my Mog has them. They're certainly safe (Roy, you were correct about American cars using them, except today it's all electronic and all a big patch of LEDs which is hideously ugly and not as easily eye-catching), except on rare occasions the relays may give trouble. But, as all Minor owners know, you can have troubles with turn-signals no matter what setup you have...

On the front lights you could just replace the bulbs w/amber bulbs, simple.
