Have removed the old oil filter (1963 traveller) 1098cc - does the metal top and bottom come off in order to put on the new paper filter? Please could you advise me of the oil filter part number.
Thank you
K

No - there is no separate top plate - it's part of the casing assembly. Under the cartridge there must be a loose plate (sometimes flat - sometimes with a central dome) and a spring with seal and washer to preload the plate against the cartridge. If this is not present - the filter is doing absolutely nothing and the bearings (and oil pump) will be ruined. See the parts on the Moss site......

If the rubber O ring in the top of the filter does not leak do not change it, you are more likely to cause problems.
Fill the filter bowl with fresh oil before refitting and turn the engine over with a coil lead off until the oil pressure light goes out
