As you can see below, after having some wood on the other side renewed, I decided to strip all the old varnish off and reseal the wood and oil - however I discovered that the channels on the near side of the car were knackered, so I took the top and bottom .. cappings? ... off, and then removed the rear sliding glass by sliding it forward and pulling it out... easy... but the front sliding glass was awkward... it was stuck in the 'metalised' felt channel both top and bottom, making it impossible to pull out... So, first question, how was I SUPPOSED to take it out? In the end I simply destroyed the edge of the felt channel since it was for the bin anyway!

Second question, more importantly, when I fir the NEW channels at the bottom, how do they attach, and do you attach them FIRST and then try and get the window into them, or do you (as I suspect) slide the bottom of the window into place with the felt channel already slid on to it?

Run a thin sausage of DumDum/sealant along the centre of the wood channels first. Tack the top channel in place, put the bottom channel on the bottom of the glass. Holding glass with bottom on hold glass up to top channel from the inside. Fit in. When the glass is in position, slide glass to one side and carefully nail down felt, then slide glass to other side and do the same. Then fit the small end pieces and nail these in the samer way. Make sure all nails are firmly down so they don't foul the glass.

Hmmnnn... what end pieces? There weren't any when I took out the old runners???

The same felt that goes along the top and bottom is fitted to the sides. If you buy the felt from ESM i.e.12' per side of car you should have enough for top, bottom and 2 sides. Cut carefully. Perhaps that's why you had so many problems with water inside the car

Oh, while you are here, oh new guru of mine.... between the front pillars and the metal bodywork there was some sort of sealant filler before I got the new wood, plus between the wood and the aluminium panels, plus round the glass on the rear doors... this sealar was sort of opaque, but not black - any idea what sort of sealant that might have been? Or rather what I should use to replace it?
