after removing my moggies two front wings, cleaning up and repainting with hammerite red oxide ready for a topcoat and wax coating i was wondering if there was a better way of doing things... i've now just removed the kick plates ready for wire brushing back in places to bare metal ready for paining. what would be the best primer to use? red oxide, that halfords zinc primer or acid etch primer? i have no idea. your opinions and experiences would be much appreciated!

So far Rotarista red lead covered by black gloss has lasted 25 years. Sadly real red lead is now banned unless you can turn some up at a boot sale. Modern red oxide is just brown undercoat. Recently (5 years back) I used jenolite then galvafroid zinc paint then QD90 gloss or International Danboline biige paint for footwells and other damp inner places that are not normally seen. OK so far but I wonder if I will live to see if its as good as the old way!

thanks for that. i guess everyone has their own slightly different ways of doing things. i think the best way for me is just see how this goes and if it fails try a different method cheers!

Probably the best coating is a non porous etch primer onto bare metal and stored dry as poss. It is best not to put any form of wax in between coats as it will be absorbed by the primer and will lead to contamination of top coats and the dreaded fish eyes in the paint. Bilt hamber etch primer in rattle cans is hard to beat and you can weld through it if need be.

Sorry slightly misread the wax bit. A good etch primer is the best place to start though as you will get a first class key to the metal.

its a good idea to panelwipe all surfaces before etch priming ,one finger print can turn rusty in a day so cleaning bare metal is a must.etch prime after ,scotch down etch when dry.then high build prime on body panels,wet or dry flat this with 600 or 800 grit on a block ,then its ready for paint!!!!
