1098 engine, 1275 gearbox?

Hi,

Is it possible to pair a 1098 Minor engine with a 1275 Midget gearbox? Or are there any other gearboxes that are a 'straight swap'? I have a feeling I'm going to need a new box soon, and MGs seem to be more common (and therefore secondhand parts cheaper and more readily available) in Ireland than Morrissises is.

Any advice appreciated.

The 1098 and MG1275 boxe are externally identical so they are a straight swap. Internally they are slightly different and the 1275 gear ratios are closer. Parts for MG boxes are getting scarce and 1st gear can still sound like a bag of spanners. The MG box also has a reversing light switch

Well first gear sounding like a bag of spanners isn't a problem compared to 1st and 2nd sounding like a chainsaw and 4th popping out when I slow down!

I have my eye on a local 1275 box for sale, which is why I ask. I guess my best bet is to go with it and refurb my own 1098 box at my leisure, keeping the midget remote (with handy reverse light switch!) when I swap back.

Thanks for the help.

Not all MG boxes came with reversing light switches. Post September '67 rings a bell. The dowel pin at the top of the backplate MAY be a different size but a 1275 gearbox has a larger hole to cope with this issue.
