The strongest method would be to weld the split up,grind down with an angle grinder or power file ( for a more delicate grinding process ) small amount of filler if really necesary, anti rust, primer and top coats.
Protect all the glass . bodywork paint and engine bay from flying sparks, when welding and grinding.Usual advice from me, disconnect battery and alternator whilst welding ( others have different views of how much precaution to take ).

drill a small hole at the end of the split or it will split further eventually

thanks for the replies, got the splits welded and ground down. The next question is if i use filler on the front edge of the bonnet, will it not crack with the force of closing the bonnet? there is a nasty dent as well which i hammered out the best i could.

Depending on the positioning and the amount of filler there's a possibility it might crack over time. How big was the split? In your first post you say it's just a 'small split' but in your last post you refer to 'splits' being welded. Was there more than one? Posting up a photo of the damage would be useful. As you've got a nasty dent in it as well perhaps it might be better to use a replacement bonnet? They can be bought pretty cheaply.

there were three small splits about 10mm long on the front lip of the bonnet, my mate ground them out and filled them with weld so they wouldn't spread.[frame]
