I have been using this site to glean lots of info, including piston ring gapping as I’m rebuilding an engine (the first time since a bike engine in the early 70’s).
Some say no need to check the gap, others you should gap them, I decided to check, I’m extremely lucky I did, I received my 1098cc piston ring set (as stated on invoice) only to find a visible ¼” gap when in the bore.
It turns out I had been sent a 948cc set in error.
Better safe than sorry!

I think would have been pretty obvious when you tried to fit them on the pistons........

I'm sure it would have been obvious if I had not checked and then snapped the first one I tried to put on the piston, not really knowing how much force to use, I actually found the correct size fairly tight to put on.
It has been nearly 40 years since I last handled piston rings, now after this learning curve I have a feel for the amount of pressure needed to put the correct size piston ring on.
It will be more obvious next time.
