On A Very Short Fuse.....

I have fitted a new fuse box/holder and managed to find some firmer wire than the brittle parts I initially found.
I have connected everything properly.
There is still a problem in that the bottom two wire sets- 3 white to the left, 4 green to the right, are not getting current with ignition on, however the top 2 light up the circuit tester OK.
I've also checked the very bottom black earth wire and made sure it's secure.
STRANGE thing-when I accidentally got the circuit tester prong bridging the gap between the 2 fuse holder clips, the whole thing started to work and I heard the petrol pump click into action.
There's obviously a problem somewhere, but I haven't a clue as to what is causing it.
Any help, please.
Best wishes
John

Fuses blown?? - Check for continuity across the fuses.....

Hiya
No, both fuses intact and replaced anyway just to be sure.
What is continuity across the fuse?
Best wishes

Hello John,
it sounds incorrectly wired, assuming the fuses are orientated vertically?
The correct wiring is fuse 1 brown wires at the top and purple wires at the bottom, (permanently live), fuse 2 white wires to the top and green wires at the bottom, (live when the ignition is on). In other words the white wires supply the geen through the fuse.

Hello,
The fusebox on Gladys has the fuses horizontal.
If you look at the photo, this is how the fusebox was, although horizontally straight. My photo editing software won't allow me to straighten it more!
The wiring as noted when I took the old one off is:
One
A brown wire and a reddish-brown wire.
Two
3 purple wires.
Three
3 white wires.
Four
4 green wires
Five
1 black wire
I hope this is instructive and helpful.
Best wishes and thank you so much

Hello John,
Ok that sounds correct except for the black wire. Black is normally earth so where does it connect to, as if it does go to earth it will blow the fuse straight away as soon as the ignition is turned on?
As per the diagram there should be two green wires on four and two green wires on five.
To do an effective check, switch on the ignition and indicators, (disconnect the coil so it doesn't overheat) and check first terminal 3, then touch the cap of the fuse at the terminal three clip, do the same on the cap on terminal four then check terminal four. Where you lose voltage is where the problem is.

Do you have the ignition switched on when doing the test? When you bridged the wires - you activated the ignition circuit. Exactly how I used to fire my Dad's cars when i was far too young to drive them......

Does this photo help? Mine is a 62 saloon. I am just rewiring it and modifying the loom, that is why I only have 3 greens, not 4.
You seem to have an extra reddish/brown wire and the black is extra also.
Basically the brown comes from the regulator and is live all the time and feeds 3 purples via the fuse, (horn x 2, interior lights).
The thick white come from the ignition switch and is only live when the ignition is on, the other two whites go to the fuel pump and coil. The thick white also feeds 4 greens via the fuse (fuel gauge, indicator stalk, flasher relay and brake light switch)
If the white is not live when the ignition is on check that the brown/blue wires are live on the regulator, if so your ignition switch is faulty or has bad connections, if not your regulator could be at fault.[frame]

Update.
I have refitted the wiring as per your advice.
1 has brown wire
2 has 3 purple wires
3 has 3 white wires
4 has 2 green wires
5 has 2 green wires.
The two "extra wires", one black, one reddish, I traced back to the Radio, so I arttached the reddish wire to terminal 1, and secured the black wire to a good earthing point on the bulkhead. Radio works fine.
I am still not getting anything from the bottom fuse with ignition on.
The petrol pump isn't kicking into life.
Terminals 3, 4 and 5 don't light the tester nor does the fuse.
On the control box the first 2 terminals, starting from left, illuminate the tester.
The3 white wires don't illuminate the tester individually or collectively.
Thinking of a break in the fat white wire, I carefully made a niche in the fat white much further down to see if it would illuminate the tester. Absolutely dead.
I'm puzzled as to why. Any help gratefully received.
Best wishes

Hello John,
does you ignition warning light come on when you switch on, if so the fault is likely to be between the ignition switch and the fuse block. If it doesn't then it may be the connection of the brown\blue between A1 on the voltage regulator, the connection at the switch or the switch it's self?

Hello,
I will check on the ignition warning light as soon as possible (she's garaged some distance away) and get back to you on this.
Best wishes

I guess there is no power getting to the Ign switch - check as above.

Just repeating what I said in a previous post.

Hello Beero,
yes, quite common in these sort of posts, but also it seems that message needed repeating, as it hadn't been acted upon?

And I had suggested it before you beero....... that's the way these threads go - it's not a competition - we are all trying to steer the problem to a happy conclusion....... If I complained every time someone repeated something I had already posted - my post count would be twice what it is already!

Hiyas,
I sorta' hoped I'd be able to at least get up to the garage and check the ignition today, even if only a 10 minute stay.
Commitments dictated otherwise, however.
I will now be hitting it early tomorrow for at least 3 hours and I will post what i find asdap.
Thank you again.
Best wishes

Hi, fault traced!!
Today I checked the ignition lights/circuit which was showing no green oil pressure or red charging light.
I did find power at number 1 and 2 in the fusebox and the first 2 terminals on the voltage regulator.
However, because I was looking from a totally different angle, I found a partially-hidden, loose brown/blue wire which I guessed must have come from the voltage regulator terminals.
I placed the wire on the first terminal on the voltage regulator, where there are 2 similarly coloured wires, then put the circuit tester on the fat white wire, which then lit up the tester!
This has been the problem and I need to clean and reconnect this wire, reconnect the white wirs to the fusebox and the problem should be solved.
Please may I say a massive thank you to you for your advice, tips and help.
It was so good of you to bear with me through this problem.
Best wishes
John
