Coil overheating?

Post by rio678 »

Hi everyone

I am now a proud owner of a 54 Morris series 2, with the 803cc engine. Broke down on the way home from driving it! found the coil to be VERY hot, since then replaced the coil and condenser, new leads etc..... Starting first time now, however the new coil is quite hot, not boiling but you wouldn't want to put your hand on it for too long.. I put a voltmeter on the terminals of the coil when running and I'm getting extremely varied readings, basically it's not holding a steady voltage for even one second, one reading was 22V! does this sound like the voltage regulator?? everything else seems fine.. and the battery is getting around 12.5-13.2V

Check the coil impedance - should be ~ 3.2 Ohms. The volts you are seeing are just an over-sensitive voltmeter seeing pulses as the points open and close. The battery voltage is correct.
