We're thinking of buying a Morris Minor - advice please!

Hi,

I have admired Morris Minors for years, and now we're in a position to look to acquire one. We are beginning to start to look for what we might want.
Our main issue is that we have 2 children who both require car seats, and so we would need rear seat belts - is this possible?!
We would also like something that is complete as we don't have the skills/knowledge or time to restore something.
Any advice on a good place to start or whether there is someone local to us that we could visit or a more local club meeting would be great - please let me know (we are based in the North East).
Thanks,

Gillian.

Rear seat belts are easily done. There seems to be various ways of doing them, a quick search on the board will bring up numerous topics.

A good Minor is a rust free Minor.
Don't be taken in by a shiny paint job, you'll need to lift the carpets and poke around underneath looking for patch repairs that have only covered up rust, not cured it.

as you are in the UK I would suggest going for the latest possible model, from the late 60's or early 70's. This will give you the best engine (1098) and most modern driving controls etc. I would suggest a four door if you have little ones as the two doors are not easy to get kids in and out of with all their stuff. As previously posted, make sure you have it checked out by someone who knows their older cars - a shiny paint job means nothing!

Two important points, others will add more. Mechanical problems are very cheap to solve but rust problems can be very expensive. Shiny looking cars can hide lots of expensive rust.

With that in mind, get in touch with your local register (meeting in a pub once a month kind of thing) and they will show you what to look for. Better still you might get someone from here to go with you to look at potential purchases.

We're a friendly bunch and you'll get a lot of help on this forum with specific issues.

:)
