Morris Minor Owners Club

Searching through Ebay today i found these classic car radios witha modern items on them such as usb and ipod connection. They are from America, the price of them are £105 english pounds or $160 in American dollars.
These would suit any morris minor, i am looking and the only thing u may need to buy is the wires and speakers.

There are plenty of cheaper ones on ebay available from the UK, which will save on the postage charges - search under 'classic car radio mp3'. Also ones which are much more 'period looking' to suit the Minor, for example this one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Classic-car-radio ... 1c1c94b493

And remember to make sure that your car polarity matches the radio polarity before fitting!

This one has cd and usb as well. and what u mean car polarity etc?

Minors were originally 'positive earthed'. In simple terms, this means that the lead from the positive terminal of the battery is earthed to a point on the bodywork. Modern cars, and modern radios, are 'negative earthed' so if you wish to run a modern radio from a Minor you need to ensure that the Minor is negative earthed. A lot of Minors will already have been changed over but the instructions for changing the polarity are here:

Personally, I think those american radios you have posted a link to don't look very 'period' for a Minor- they don't look much different from any modern car radio that you can get from Halfords etc. If you are just looking for a radio with a cd player and usb port to fit in your Minor, and are not bothered about whether it looks 'period' style or not, why not just buy one in the UK at a fraction of the price?

that is an idea, herd aldi do a bluetooth aux usb etc for £50. And the car will be negative earth

Sorry, can't advise you on a radio which has all of those features as I have never bought a 'modern' car radio. My modern cars have all had one fitted as standard when I bought them and the only radio I've had fitted to any of my Minors was a proper 60's one. I imagine that most modern ones will have the features you're looking for though so maybe have a look in halfords, argos etc or perhaps someone on here can recommend one. It will depend on your price range too - do you just want a cheapish basic radio or a better quality one with a decent output? It can be difficult to hear a standard radio over the normal noise of a Minor when driving so you'll need to get some decent speakers too

This is a classic car forum. Go into halfords, they know all about modern stereo's and can sell you one.

Dunno how any of you can hear a wireless in a Minor anyway...... I tried it once - hopeless........

maybe you couldn't hear it because it was wireless. they work much better when plugged in

The whole idea is that the music kind of floats through the air and somehow sticks to the metal rod on the wing of the car - and then runs in to the wireless in the car. Someone did explain rather better to me once, but then I am only a Radio Amateur.... If you had to trail a wire along behind it would surely get tangled up with other folks wires ????

And can any one reccomend speakers?

Simply go to a good car audio supplier and ask for their advice .You can then view and listen to many options and simply choose one that suits your personal taste (and pocket)!
Car audio is very much dependant on the listener and what other people like may well not be to your liking so how can we be expected to advise?

Should i trust halfords or a local place?

Go to both! Do what David has already suggested. Decide on your budget, check out the specs, listen to the sound output if you can, compare costs then decide which model to go for. Same as if you were buying a car, camera, stereo etc. Always a good idea to shop around first to make sure you get the product which suits you and your budget. It's your car and your radio - you decide!

I had a 300 watt amp, set of 4 'ok' speakers and a massive sub in one of the bootboards.

Still couldnt hear it at motorway speeds.


The sound of pops, burbles and overun downhill in gear beats anything you can stick on your radio anyway.
On a similar note though, I'm sure I saw a company making 8-track units with the cartridge slot monged to take Ipods.
