With the remote control casing off of the extension housing, if I put oil in through there, will it flow into the gearbox proper? Or does it have to go directly into the gearbox?
I ask because the gearbox has been drained and I have the RC casing off and it would be so much easier to pour the oil in through that large opening rather than the small filler hole.

(Yes, I do have a funnel)

If you take the oil filler plug out to observe the level or just fill from empty with a measured amount it will be fine!

If the gearbox is out of the car and the engine still in, you might find the oil running out at the back when re-fitting unless you plug it.

The engine and gearbox (we call it a transmission) are in the car, the propshaft (we call it a driveshaft) is not in yet, but I do intend to put it back in before I put oil into the gearbox. I'm not a complete dummy, I've been working on cars and machinery for over 50 years, so I think that I'm reasonably competant at this point.

i think you could pour oil in there, but you wouldn;'t know how full it was until you've filled it to the top. the filler plug is where it is so you can't over fill it. so you would want to take the filler plug out to check the oil level, and once you've got that far, you may aswell pour the oil in the filler hole anyway!

It's a interesting question. I can't see any reason why not. If you were trying to fill it through the gear lever hole in the RC it might be a different matter, but as far as I know the RC mounting hole leads straight into the main gearbox chamber. So as long as you take the filler plug out first, and pour oil through the RC hole until it starts to ooze from the filler hole, you should be fine. Sounds a lot easier than trying to squirt/pour/dribble oil in through the filler hole - and a lot less messy!.

There is a hole directly above the filler in the gearbox cover - so a long filler funnel works well.....

Prior to putting the oil in yesterday I looked at the gearbox and noticed that the filler plug and the remote control casing are both on the extension housing so putting the oil in the top goes to exactly the same place as putting it in the filler hole.
Much easier for a klutz like me pouring oil into the large opening rather than the small one.
Now, as time permits, only about 100 or so more jobs to do before getting the car on the road, and still waiting for parts before some of them can be done.

i have a funnel with a foot of garden hose attached wich i use to fill mine throu the normal hole no probs.
