Try making sure you have enough fluid, and bleed the system and see if there is an improvment!

Well done Matt -some sound advice. Sounds like you are pumping air.
'If' there is fluid in the M/C then there may be air in the lines somewhere - and if so, something will need fixing as well as it needing bleeding. (use Dot 4 fluid)
Did this happen overnight or was it gradual - if it was gradual over a year then did you adjust the brakes?
If the M/C is empty you're going to need to find the leak. If you get an air bubble when you press the pedal then it is a leaking secondary seal and probably caused by a corroded bore (needs a new M/C)
The least likely option is that you just need new seals in the M/C, but as new M/C's start at £39.95 (Bull Motif), it's often not worth bothering with a seal kit unless the M/C is good to start with.

Before you start, if you intend to try fitting a recon kit to your
master cylinder then make sure you have the correct size kit.
The early Masters were 7/8" bore, the later ones are SMALLER
(13/16") so check it out. The bore is stamped on the outside
of the Master Cylinder.
